Casper Faces Second Night of Widespread Spectrum Outage

Casper, WY – Residents of Casper, Bar Nunn, and Mills experienced a second night of widespread communications outages affecting Spectrum and Verizon Wireless customers. The outages, impacting internet, phone, and cell service, began around 8 p.m. on both Tuesday and Wednesday.
Tuesday's outage, according to a Charter Communications (Spectrum's parent company) spokesperson, resulted from a severed third-party fiber optic cable. Engineers restored service by 7 a.m. MT Wednesday. While a Verizon Wireless spokesperson confirmed the impact on their service due to the same fiber cut, they did not respond to requests for comment on Wednesday. A similar citywide outage in 2017 was also attributed to a severed fiber optic cable.
Wednesday's outage, described by Spectrum as a "technical issue," began around 8 p.m. and affected most customers until service was restored by 1 a.m., with full restoration by 5 a.m., according to Spectrum. Spectrum sent email and text alerts to customers, stating that they were aware of the issue and technicians were investigating.
Verizon Wireless, in a statement released Thursday, attributed their Wednesday service interruptions to the Tuesday fiber cut, noting that an additional repair was required before service was fully restored just before 3 a.m. Thursday. The company clarified that they rely on third-party fiber providers for their cell site connections.
Neither Spectrum nor Verizon Wireless would identify the third-party responsible for the initial cable damage. The repeated outages have raised concerns among residents about the reliability of communications infrastructure in the Casper area.
