Apple Pays $95M to Settle Siri Eavesdropping Claims
## Apple to Pay $95 Million to Settle Siri Eavesdropping Claims

Apple will pay $95 million to settle a class-action lawsuit alleging its Siri voice assistant illegally recorded private conversations. The settlement, reached on December 31, 2024, follows a 2021 lawsuit filed by California resident Fumiko Lopez and other users who claimed Siri intercepted and shared their private communications with third-party businesses, resulting in targeted advertising. While Apple denies any wrongdoing, the settlement allows eligible consumers to file claims for compensation.

The lawsuit, filed in a California federal court, alleged that Siri's unintended activations captured confidential conversations and disclosed them without user consent. Plaintiffs stated they experienced targeted advertising based on conversations overheard by Siri, even instances of recording without any verbal interaction. Supporting evidence included a 2019 Guardian article detailing Apple contractors' access to confidential information. Apple, while denying wrongdoing, acknowledged in a 2019 statement that they hadn't fully met their privacy ideals and vowed improvements to Siri's privacy protections.

Eligibility for the settlement includes anyone who owned or purchased a Siri-enabled device—iPhones, iPads, Apple Watches, MacBooks, iMacs, HomePods, iPod touches, and Apple TVs—between September 17, 2014, and December 31, 2024, and experienced an unintended Siri activation during a private conversation. Apple employees, legal representatives, and judicial officers assigned to the case are excluded.

Claimants can submit their claims through the Lopez Voice Assistant Settlement website by July 2, 2025. Some claimants received notification via email or postcard containing a claim ID and confirmation code. The maximum payout per device is $20, with a cap of $100 per claimant for up to five devices. Payment methods include physical check, e-check, and direct deposit.

A final approval hearing is scheduled for August 1, 2025. While payments are expected to be processed promptly if the settlement is approved and no appeals are filed, potential delays due to appeals are possible. Claimants are advised to monitor the settlement website for updates. To contact the settlement administrator, call 1-888-981-4106, mail to Lopez Voice Assistant Settlement Administrator, P.O.
