Red Cross Urges Spring Blood Donations; $5K Giveaway

**Wichita, KS/Burns, OR/Minneapolis, MN –** The American Red Cross is urging increased blood donations this spring, citing typical winter slowdowns and the upcoming severe weather season. The organization is offering incentives, including a chance to win a $5,000 gift card, to boost participation.
According to Red Cross regional spokesperson Logan Wright, spring and April are particularly crucial in storm-prone regions. Severe weather can disrupt blood drives and donor availability, leading to unstable blood supplies. He emphasized the importance of donations now to maintain sufficient blood stocks throughout the upcoming storm season. Blood has a shelf life of only 42 days, highlighting the urgent need for consistent replenishment.
Donors who give blood during April will receive a Red Cross t-shirt and be automatically entered into a drawing for one of three $5,000 gift cards. This promotion applies to donations made from April 14th to April 30th, according to a separate announcement. The Red Cross highlights the critical need for Type O blood in particular.
The Red Cross relies on thousands of volunteer donors daily to collect over 12,000 blood and 3,000 platelet donations. Blood drives themselves are also dependent on volunteers. To support these efforts, the Red Cross is actively holding drives throughout the country. In Harney County, Oregon, blood drives will be held from April 29th to May 1st at various locations, including the Harney County Community Center, the Emigrant Creek Ranger District, and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Individuals can register using the sponsor code "BurnsCommunity" at redcrossblood.org.
The Red Cross emphasizes that someone in the United States needs blood every two seconds, underscoring the continuous and vital need for donations.
