Popovich Hospitalized After Fainting; Health Concerns Rise

San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich was hospitalized Tuesday night after fainting at a San Antonio steakhouse, according to multiple reports. TMZ Sports obtained video footage showing the 76-year-old being placed on a stretcher and into an ambulance around 8:20 PM. Sources told TMZ that Popovich, who suffered a mild stroke in early November, appeared to be experiencing lingering effects from the stroke prior to the incident. He reportedly spent approximately two hours at the restaurant before the medical emergency.
While officials responded to a call for an elderly person who had fainted, sources indicated that Popovich was alert and talking upon entering the ambulance. The injury or illness was reported as non-life-threatening. The Spurs have not yet commented on the incident.
Popovich, widely considered one of the greatest basketball coaches of all time, has been on indefinite leave from the Spurs since February, with assistant coach Mitch Johnson serving as interim head coach. He announced in February that he would not return to coach the team this season, prioritizing his health. His absence follows a season in which the Spurs finished with a 34-48 record, missing the NBA playoffs. Further complicating matters, star player Victor Wembanyama was ruled out for the season in February due to a deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder.
Popovich’s illustrious career includes five NBA championships with the Spurs and a gold medal with Team USA at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. His hospitalization raises further concerns about his long-term health and future with the team. Newsweek and other outlets have reported on the incident, underscoring the significant impact of this health scare on the basketball world. The latest incident follows his earlier stroke, prompting renewed focus on Popovich’s health and recovery.
