Planned Parenthood Cuts: 3 Michigan Clinics to Close

Planned Parenthood of Michigan (PPMI) announced Thursday it will close three clinics and consolidate two others by May 5th, citing anticipated funding cuts by the Trump administration. The closures, impacting clinics in Jackson, Petoskey, and Marquette, will result in a 10% reduction in staff, or 22 positions. The last patient appointments at these locations will be April 25th, with the closures effective April 30th. Two Ann Arbor health centers will be consolidated.
PPMI anticipates a $5.4 million annual funding loss due to the Trump administration’s actions. The administration is freezing Title X family planning funds for nine Planned Parenthood state affiliates and sixteen other organizations, totaling $27.5 million, pending investigation into alleged violations of the president's executive orders, including those related to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives. While PPMI hasn't yet received this notice, they expect it imminently.
The federal government’s actions are part of a broader $11 billion cut to public health grants, including $379 million in funding for Michigan, and is expected to lead to 10,000 employee layoffs across the Department of Health and Human Services. The cuts jeopardize access to vital services, including birth control, sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing and treatment, and other essential healthcare.
In response to the anticipated funding loss, PPMI plans to expand its Virtual Health Center, offering telehealth services seven days a week for birth control, medication abortions, and gender-affirming care. PPMI leadership emphasized that these difficult decisions were made to ensure the long-term sustainability of the organization and its ability to serve Michigan communities. The closures and consolidations are viewed as a strategic adaptation to a challenging political landscape characterized by ongoing attacks on reproductive healthcare access. Further anticipated attacks include restricting access to medication abortions, limiting Medicaid coverage for Planned Parenthood services, and potentially ending the Title X funding program altogether. After the closures, the nearest Planned Parenthood locations for most of Upper Michigan will be in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and for lower Michigan, the Walker Health Center in Traverse City.
