NBA Play-In Tournament Set for April 15-18, 2025

The 2024-25 NBA regular season concludes on April 13th, setting the stage for the annual play-in tournament, scheduled for April 15th through 18th. This precedes the first round of the NBA playoffs. Introduced in the 2020-21 season, the play-in tournament expands the postseason field to 20 teams (10 per conference), increasing the competitiveness of the final stretch of the regular season.

The top six teams in each conference automatically qualify for the playoffs. Teams ranked seventh through tenth compete in the play-in tournament for the remaining two playoff berths in each conference. The format remains consistent: the seventh seed hosts the eighth seed in Game 1; the ninth seed hosts the tenth seed in Game 2. The winners of Game 1 advance to the playoffs as the seventh seed. The losers of Game 1 face the winners of Game 2 in Game 3. The victors of Game 3 secure the eighth seed, while the losers are eliminated. This system creates a high-stakes environment where teams ranked seventh and eighth have two chances to clinch a playoff spot, while teams ranked ninth and tenth must win two consecutive games.

The Eastern Conference playoff race is intense. The Atlanta Hawks and Orlando Magic are battling for the seventh seed and home-court advantage in the first play-in game. Meanwhile, the Chicago Bulls and Miami Heat are vying for the ninth and tenth seeds. In the Western Conference, the competition is equally fierce. The Golden State Warriors (sixth seed) hold a slight edge over the Minnesota Timberwolves and the LA Clippers (eighth seed), with the standings constantly shifting as the season winds down. Every remaining regular-season game carries significant weight in determining playoff seeding.

Numerous regular season games in the final two weeks will greatly impact the final playoff standings. These include matchups such as the Orlando Magic versus Atlanta Hawks (April 8th), Chicago Bulls versus Miami Heat (April 9th), and several key Western Conference games featuring the Golden State Warriors, Minnesota Timberwolves, LA Clippers, Los Angeles Lakers, Denver Nuggets, Memphis Grizzlies, and others, scheduled throughout the first two weeks of April. The final regular season games on April 13th will solidify the playoff picture before the commencement of the play-in tournament. The teams finishing below the tenth seed will participate in the NBA draft lottery.
