Montgomery Upsets Tomova in Charleston Open First Round

American Robin Montgomery pulled off an upset victory over Viktoriya Tomova in the first round of the Volvo Car Open on Monday at the Family Circle Tennis Center. Montgomery, ranked No. 104, defeated the No. 64-ranked Tomova with a decisive 6-1, 6-3 win. This propels Montgomery into the second round where she will face No. 7 seed Danielle Collins.

The Charleston Open, a WTA 500 event, boasts a strong field this year, including last week’s Miami finalist Jessica Pegula, Australian Open champion Madison Keys, and defending Charleston champion Danielle Collins, who began her tournament on Tuesday. The tournament is expected to feature high-quality tennis throughout the week.

Montgomery’s victory comes after a two-set loss to Bernarda Pera in the qualifying round of the Miami Open presented by Itau on March 17, 2025. Tomova’s most recent match resulted in a loss to Aryna Sabalenka 3-6, 0-6 in the Round of 64 at the same Miami tournament on March 20, 2025.

Collins, despite experiencing early exits in the Australian Open and Miami Open this year – losing to the eventual champions in both – is considered a strong contender to defend her Charleston title. While Montgomery is a promising young talent, pre-tournament predictions favored Collins to advance. However, Montgomery's victory demonstrates her rising potential and ability to compete against higher-ranked opponents. The matchup between Montgomery and Collins promises to be a compelling contest in the next round.
