Liza Minnelli's Drag Race Debut: Lifetime Achievement Award
Liza Minnelli, the EGOT-winning entertainer, will receive the Giving Us Lifetime Achievement Award on the season 17 finale of RuPaul’s Drag Race, airing Friday, April 18, at 8 p.m. ET/PT on MTV. The announcement was made by MTV and World of Wonder Productions. RuPaul will present the award to Minnelli on the Main Stage, a moment captured in a first-look photo showing the two holding hands as Minnelli sits on a throne.
This marks Minnelli's debut on the show, a significant event given her long-standing relationship with the LGBTQ+ community and the influence of her legacy on RuPaul’s Drag Race. Four queens across the global franchise have previously portrayed Minnelli in the Snatch Game impersonation challenge, including Alexis Michelle (Season 9 and All Stars 8), who famously won the challenge for her portrayal. Additional winning performances included Scarlett BoBo (Canada's Drag Race Season 1), Hannah Conda (Drag Race Down Under Season 2), and La Voix (RuPaul’s Drag Race UK Season 6). Furthermore, Jinkx Monsoon's portrayal of Minnelli's mother, Judy Garland, in All Stars 7 was also critically acclaimed.
Minnelli’s appearance adds to a season 17 that has already featured high-profile guest judges including Katy Perry, Doechii, Hunter Schafer, Quinta Brunson, and Adam Lambert. The finale will showcase the final five queens – Jewels Sparkles, Lexi Love, Onya Nurve, Sam Star, and Suzie Toot – competing for the crown. The Giving Us Lifetime Achievement Award, now in its third year, previously honored Bob Mackie (Season 15) and Elvira (Cassandra Peterson) (Season 16). Minnelli's documentary, "Liza: A Truly Terrific Absolutely True Story," premiered on PBS the same week as the announcement. The award recognizes individuals who have significantly influenced the drag world and the queer community.
