Lindsay Lohan & Jamie Lee Curtis Return in "Freakier Friday"
LOS ANGELES – Get ready for another dose of body-swapping chaos! Disney has announced a sequel to the beloved 2003 film "Freaky Friday," titled "Freakier Friday," bringing back stars Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan as mother-daughter duo Tess and Anna Coleman. The film, directed by Nisha Ganatra ("Late Night," "The Cheetah Girls: One World"), is slated for release on August 8, 2025.
This sequel takes a multigenerational approach, expanding upon the original's body-swap premise. The story picks up years after the events of the first film, with Anna now a mother herself. Her 14-year-old daughter, Harper (Julia Butters), and her soon-to-be stepsister, Lily (Sophia Hammons), daughter of Anna's fiancé, become entangled in the supernatural body-swapping phenomenon along with Tess and Anna. Casting calls describe Harper as a sharp-witted teen surfer, and Lily as sharp-tongued, highlighting the potential for comedic conflict between the two stepsisters. The trailer hints at a four-way body swap, with scenes showcasing characters inhabiting each other's bodies, leading to humorous and chaotic situations.
Familiar faces will return alongside the leads. Chad Michael Murray reprises his role from the original film, and other returning cast members include Mark Harmon, Christina Vidal Mitchell, Haley Hudson, and Stephen Tobolowsky. New additions to the cast include Manny Jacinto, and Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, alongside Butters and Hammons. The film will also see the return of Rosalind Chao and Lucille Soong.
The trailer, set to Chappell Roan's "Hot To Go!," showcases a montage of the characters navigating life in each other's bodies, engaging in activities such as tennis, surfing, and driving a convertible. The official logline from Disney states, "Tess and Anna discover that lightning might indeed strike twice," hinting at the return of the body-swapping magic. While the plot remains largely under wraps, the film promises to explore the challenges of blending families and navigating the complexities of mother-daughter relationships across generations.
Lohan expressed her excitement at the D23 Expo, crediting the fans' love for the original film as the reason for the sequel's creation. Disney's marketing campaign has already begun, leveraging nostalgia with a first-look image recreating an iconic moment from the original film. The studio is anticipating strong box office performance, given the film’s nostalgic appeal and the return of the beloved stars. "Freakier Friday" aims to be more than just a nostalgic reboot; it intends to be a heartfelt and funny continuation of the original story, updated for a modern audience.
