Gwyneth Paltrow Ditches Paleo Diet, Embraces Carbs

Gwyneth Paltrow, the Oscar-winning actress and founder of the wellness brand Goop, has announced a significant change to her diet, moving away from the strict paleo regimen she and her husband, Brad Falchuk, have followed for several years. Speaking on her Goop podcast, Paltrow revealed she's reintroducing carbohydrates, including sourdough bread, pasta, and cheese, into her diet.
Paltrow attributed this shift to evolving health concerns, citing "longer-term inflammation and health stuff" as the reason for the change. While she acknowledges the paleo diet’s emphasis on whole, fresh foods—a foundation she continues to value—she admits to growing weary of its restrictions. She previously detailed her family's experience with her father's throat cancer, which spurred her initial interest in wellness and macrobiotic diets. This earlier phase involved a highly restrictive approach focused on locally sourced, seasonal foods, eliminating dairy and sugar. Paltrow candidly admitted to being "a little didactic" about her dietary choices at that time.
Priya Tew, a specialist dietitian and spokesperson for the British Dietetic Association, praised Paltrow's dietary adjustment, emphasizing the importance of carbohydrates for fiber, B vitamins, energy, gut health, and overall enjoyment of meals. Tew highlighted the detrimental effects of eliminating entire food groups, advocating for dietary diversity for optimal nutrition and well-being. She stated that cutting out whole food groups is "not good for our overall health."
Paltrow's dietary evolution follows previous experiments with macrobiotic eating, a highly restrictive vegan-based approach aimed at avoiding toxins and adhering to strict rules around eating, drinking, and food preparation. However, Tew noted the lack of scientific evidence supporting the claims of macrobiotic diets curing or preventing diseases like throat cancer. She similarly clarified there is no definitive evidence proving the benefits of the paleo diet. Despite her past restrictive dietary choices, Paltrow emphasized the continued importance of consuming whole, fresh foods, maintaining that it's a solid dietary foundation. This dietary shift comes as Paltrow prepares for a return to acting in the upcoming film *Marty Supreme*.
