Elton John Reveals Latest Health Battles

Sir Elton John, the iconic singer-songwriter, has candidly discussed a series of health challenges in recent interviews and documentaries, prompting reflection on his mortality and the preciousness of time. At 78, John has faced several health setbacks, most recently a partial loss of vision following a severe eye infection last summer. He jokingly remarked to People magazine, "there's not much of me left," listing past surgeries and the removal of his tonsils, adenoids, appendix, prostate, and both hips, leaving only his left hip intact. Despite these challenges, he emphasizes that he is "still here," acknowledging a near-fatal risk during his past addiction.
A significant health concern involved the eye infection, which significantly impacted his vision in one eye. While promoting his new album, *Who Believes in Angels?* (recorded with Brandi Carlile), John revealed the ongoing slow healing process on Instagram, expressing gratitude for his medical team and family. This health issue affected his ability to fully participate in the promotion of his musical, *The Devil Wears Prada*, where he admitted to limited vision on stage.
Beyond the recent eye infection, John has confronted other health issues throughout his career. These include appendicitis requiring surgery in 2013, a prostate cancer diagnosis and subsequent surgery in 2017 (which resulted in near-fatal complications), and a hip injury leading to tour postponements in 2021. He also openly discusses living with Type 2 diabetes since the early 2000s.
These experiences have profoundly impacted John's perspective on life and death. While recording *Who Believes in Angels*, a song titled "When This Old World is Done with Me" triggered an emotional response, causing him to weep for 45 minutes as he processed his own mortality. The documentary *Elton John: Never Too Late* further explores this theme, showing John contemplating his legacy and the limited time he has left. He expresses concern for his children, Zachary and Elijah, who understandably worry about their father's age and health. He emphasizes his desire to cherish the time with his family and be present for as long as possible. Despite the health struggles, John remains actively involved in music, emphasizing that creating music helps him cope. An ITV concert featuring John and Carlile performing tracks from the new album aired on April 19th.
