Brosnan, Mirren, Hardy Star in Paramount+'s MobLand
Paramount+'s new crime series, *MobLand*, boasts a star-studded cast including Pierce Brosnan, Helen Mirren, Tom Hardy, and Paddy Considine. The series, created by Ronan Bennett ( *The Day of the Jackal*) and partly directed by Guy Ritchie, follows the Harrigan crime family as they navigate bloody gangland rivalries and familial tensions.
Brosnan and Mirren portray Conrad and Maeve Harrigan, the patriarch and matriarch of the family, respectively. Brosnan described his character to GQ as "a mangled man who has charisma, but he’s someone who is dangerously on the edge," noting that he's "aligned with a wife who is equally outrageous." Mirren, in a March 30th interview with Parade, praised her working relationship with Brosnan, highlighting their similar work ethics and shared ability to "have fun without being flippant." Their on-screen partnership extends beyond *MobLand*; they also costar in the upcoming Netflix film, *The Thursday Murder Club*.
Tom Hardy takes on the role of Harry Da Souza, a "street-smart 'fixer'" caught in the crossfire between the Harrigans and their rivals, the Stevensons. The series depicts Harry as a figure akin to Harvey Keitel’s character in *Pulp Fiction*, tasked with cleaning up the Harrigans’ messes. The series also features Paddy Considine as Kevin Harrigan, Conrad's son, and Joanne Froggatt as Harry's wife, Jan. Other cast members include Anson Boon, Felix Edwards, Jasmine Jobson, Antonio Gonzalez Guerrero, Geoff Bell, Lara Pulver, Daniel Betts, Mandeep Dhillon, and Alex Jennings.
While the acting is lauded, reviews of the first two episodes indicate a reliance on familiar crime drama tropes. One critic described the series as "regurgitation," noting a lack of originality in the plot and character development. Despite the star power, the series is criticized for failing to fully utilize the talents of its cast, particularly Hardy.
*MobLand* premiered on March 30th and airs weekly on Sundays on Paramount+. The series' future beyond the current season remains unconfirmed.
