Brewers' Patrick to Start: Can He Deliver First Win?
Brewers' Rookie Patrick to Get Second Chance as Starting Pitcher Against Royals

MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee Brewers, winless after a four-game losing streak, will hand the starting pitching role to rookie Chad Patrick in Tuesday's game against the Kansas City Royals. The game, with a 6:40 p.m. CT first pitch, marks a crucial opportunity for the Brewers (0-4) to secure their first victory of the season.

Patrick, a 26-year-old right-hander, made his major league debut in relief on Saturday, allowing two runs on two hits in one inning. He was initially optioned to Class AAA Nashville on March 9th before being unexpectedly added to the Brewers' 26-man roster due to a spate of spring training pitching injuries to Aaron Ashby, DL Hall, and Aaron Civale. The absence of José Quintana, who is building up his workload in the minors, further depleted the Brewers' starting rotation, leaving them essentially with only Freddy Peralta and Nestor Cortes as surefire starters. Cortes’ availability may also be limited as he is expected to miss some time for the birth of a child.

Patrick’s unexpected promotion is a testament to his impressive performance in 2024 with the Nashville Sounds, where he had a dominant season. He won the International League Triple Crown, leading both AAA leagues in wins (14-1), strikeouts (145), and ERA (2.90) across 26 games (24 starts) and 136 innings. This performance, along with his impressive 1.09 WHIP, earned him the International League Pitcher of the Year award. He was acquired from the Oakland Athletics before the 2024 season in exchange for third baseman Abraham Toro.

The Brewers’ starting rotation faces further challenges. Right-hander Aaron Civale was placed on the 15-day injured list with a strained left hamstring. The team's struggles extend beyond pitching, as evidenced by their 36-14 scoring deficit and 15 home runs allowed during a three-game sweep by the New York Yankees. This current four-game losing streak is their first since July 2023.

Patrick will face Royals' right-hander Michael Lorenzen, who had a 7-6 record with a 3.31 ERA in 2024, pitching for both Texas and Kansas City. The Royals are coming off a win against the Cleveland Guardians, demonstrating resilience despite their own recent losses. The Brewers, meanwhile, aim to overcome their slow start, hoping Patrick can deliver the team's first win of the season.
