Barcelona SC Kicks Off Copa Libertadores Campaign Against Independiente del Valle

GUAYAQUIL, ECUADOR – Barcelona Sporting Club (Barcelona SC) begins its 2025 Copa Libertadores campaign tonight, Tuesday, April 1st, at 9:00 PM local time. The match, taking place at Estadio Banco Pichincha, pits the Guayaquil-based team against Ecuadorian rivals Independiente del Valle in the first match of Group B.

This encounter serves as a rematch for Barcelona SC following a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Independiente del Valle on March 8th. Both teams enter the match on winning streaks; Barcelona SC secured a 2-0 victory over Delfín SC in the Liga Pro Ecuabet, while Independiente del Valle triumphed 2-1 against Aucas.

Barcelona SC qualified for the group stage after navigating two preliminary rounds. Several Ecuadorian players will participate in the Libertadores tournament representing various clubs, both domestically and internationally. In Group B, alongside Barcelona SC and Independiente del Valle, is Universitario de Perú, where Ecuadorian players José Carabalí and Jairo Vélez will compete. Gonzalo Plata will represent Flamengo in Group C, facing Liga de Quito. Robert Arboleda plays for Sao Paulo in Group D, alongside fellow Ecuadorian players Eryc Castillo and Fernando Gaibor, who share the group with Alianza Lima. Enner Valencia, Ecuador's top scorer, will play for Internacional in Group F.

Barcelona SC coach Segundo Castillo is reportedly close to finalizing his starting lineup, with the only remaining uncertainty in midfield. The battle for a starting spot lies between Cristian Solano, offering more dynamism and physicality, and Gabriel Cortez, known for his creativity and ball control. Barcelona SC aims for a crucial home victory against a strong opponent, Independiente del Valle, a consistently competitive team in South American club football. The team seeks to capitalize on home-field advantage to start their Libertadores journey with a win.
